    SHOULDS

     Silje Alberthe Kamille Friis

    How many shoulds
    are there in my head?
    A billion, a trillion,
    an undending supply?
    A Galaxy of Should
    in a Universe of Should,
    ever expanding.
    The Big Bang of Shoulds
    exploded and reached
    to every corner, cell,
nook and neuron of my mind.

    I revolve around the
    Should Sun.
    Every turn and whirl
    depends on should.

I used to think the world
    was flat.
    When I discovered it
    was round,
    my Shoulds told me,
    "You should have
    known that."

I am taking a walk in the rain.
I should have worn better shoes.
    I should buy better shoes.
    I should not have
spent the money on better shoes.

I tidy a corner of the room.
I should tidy the whole room.
I should tidy the whole house,
    the whole block,
    the whole neighborhood,
    the whole city,
    Louisiana,
    the United States,
    the world,
    the galaxy and,
    I should not forget,
    the universe.

    And people -
    people should
    be a certain way.
    If they're not,
    I should worry about that
    because it should be
    my responsibility
to make them be what they
    should be.

    I should be thin.
    I should not slouch.
    I should get up earlier.
    I should do more and
    I should do it right.

    Maybe it's time,
    I really should-
    no-
    strike that.
    Maybe it's time,
    I choose
to move to a different Universe
that I know is out there.
    But just how should I
    shake off my Shoulders
    and escape?
    By zapping one
    Shoulder
    at
    a
    time.
